Bernice Mathews Elementary School

This school was named for Bernice Martin Mathews, a long-time Truckee Meadows resident. Ms. Mathews earned both her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing and her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration in Higher Education from the University of Nevada, Reno. She has received several honors throughout her lifetime. In 1982 Ms. Mathews was named Outstanding Alumnus of the University of Nevada’s School of Nursing, and in 1993 she was awarded the University’s President’s Medal for her many contributions to higher education in the state of Nevada. She is a member of the Nevada
Women’s Fund Hall of Fame and was selected Nevada’s Mother of the Year in 1988. Bernice Mathews, in her roles of mother, nurse, business owner, community leader, Reno City Councilwoman and Nevada State Senator, has touched the lives of many Nevadans.
